Makita has come out with a new cordless vacuum in their 18V X2 lineup, model XCV05Z. It’s a backpack vac, and as per the X2, it works off of (2) 18V Li-ion battery packs.
While not quite as surprising as their robotic vacuum, or as versatile as their AC/cordless X2 vac, or as compact as their ball vac, the new backpack vac gives you greater mobility, free from having to drag a vac around the floor.
The new Makita backpack vacuum has HEPA filtration, a 1/2 gallon capacity, and it’s powered by a brushless motor giving it up to 90 minutes of runtime on the low suction setting.
- 53 CFM suction power, 28.5″ of water lift
- Up to 90 mins runtime on low power, 60 mins on high, with 2x 5.0Ah Li-ion batteries
- Weighs 9.4 lbs
- 39″ flexible hose
- 20″ to 34″ telescoping wand
- Floor nozzle
Price: $352 for the bare vac, you’ll need a charger and (2) battery packs to get started

First Thoughts
While it seems to me that 1/2 gallon might not be a lot of dust and debris-holding capacity, I think Makita engineers made the right call, keeping the weight under 10 lbs.
I’m not quite sure what to think of the design, not having really looked at any backpack vacs or blowers before. The hose comes out of the top, and controls are at the side.
